Most word counters give you one number. This one is built for people who write against limits for a living: students staring down a 2,000-word essay cap, freelancers billing by the word, and editors checking whether a draft fits a 700-word slot.
Words are split on Unicode word boundaries, so hyphenated compounds ("state-of-the-art") count once and contractions don't inflate your total. Characters are counted as code points, sentences by terminal punctuation, and paragraphs by blank-line breaks. Reading time uses 238 words per minute — the average adult silent-reading speed found in Marc Brysbaert's 2019 meta-analysis of 190 studies — and speaking time uses a 150 wpm presentation pace.
If you're 80 words over an essay cap, the density panel is the fastest route down: sort your most-repeated words, and cut the qualifiers ("very", "really", "quite") that cluster at the top. If you're under, resist padding — examiners notice. Expand your thinnest paragraph instead; the paragraph count tells you which section is doing the least work.
Your text never leaves your device — counting happens locally in JavaScript. That matters if you're checking an unpublished manuscript, a legal draft, or anything under NDA. There is no server, no account, and nothing to delete afterwards.
A practical note on limits: word processors disagree with each other. Microsoft Word counts "twenty-one" as one word; some university systems count it as two. If a hard limit matters, check which counter the gatekeeper uses — and leave yourself a 1% margin.
